Movies & Cinema ESL Unit- Genres, Reviews, Vocabulary & Film History

This complete 3-lesson Movies & Cinema unit takes students from movie genres and everyday film vocabulary to film reviews, speaking activities and the fascinating history of cinema. Designed to get students actively using English, the lessons combine vocabulary, reading, listening, speaking, writing and interactive games in a topic that upper primary students and teenagers can easily connect with.

Lesson 1: Movie Genres & Speaking

Students learn and practise a wide range of movie genres through flashcards, matching activities, reading descriptions, games and speaking tasks. They identify different genres, talk about films they know, discuss how different types of films make them feel and use the new vocabulary in conversation. The lesson also includes a cinema role-play where students use information from movie cards to invite a partner to the cinema and discuss the film.

Lesson 2: Movies, Cinema & Film Vocabulary

Students expand their vocabulary with words connected to movies, filmmaking and cinema, including people involved in making films and other useful movie-related vocabulary. Activities include flashcards, word and picture matching, a definitions puzzle, film reviews and reading comprehension. Students compare Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings in a team challenge and then use what they have learned to write their own movie review.

Lesson 3: The History of Cinema

Students discover how cinema developed over time, learning about important moments and changes in film history. They work with History of Cinema reading cards, answer comprehension questions, sequence important events and build an interactive cinema timeline. The lesson can begin with short clips of famous films so students can observe how cinema has changed over the years. It finishes with a Spin the Wheel speaking and review game, bringing together vocabulary, opinions and knowledge from the unit.
